Are Addiction Treatment Programs Covered by Insurance?

Yes, addiction treatment programs are covered by insurance. This includes medication-assisted treatment. Health insurance plans cover treatment for substance use disorders as well as treatment for co-occurring diagnoses. Insurance companies also cannot deny coverage based on addiction issues. However, how much of your treatment is covered by insurance might depend on your specific plan.

Typically, you’ll need a referral from your doctor in order to have an addiction treatment program covered by your insurance. Your primary doctor will need to confirm that you are struggling with addiction and that a professional treatment program will be necessary for you to recover. Detox, inpatient care, and outpatient treatment all can be covered by insurance. However, specific insurance policies can have limits on the length of treatment or might require ongoing assessments to determine the length of coverage.

How to Finance Addiction Treatment

Receiving professional help for a substance use disorder is an investment in your future. Addiction is costly. You might have found yourself spending your savings on drugs or alcohol. In addition, substance abuse issues can cause problems at work. Some of those who struggle with addiction lose their jobs after using drugs or alcohol at work or showing up intoxicated. Others face legal issues as a result of driving under the influence or buying illicit drugs.

Going through a treatment program might seem expensive initially, but it can help prevent more costly issues in the future. And when treatment is covered by insurance, there’s no reason to put off getting the help you need.

If you are uninsured or our treatment center is out-of-network, there are other options for paying for treatment:

  • Private pay
  • State grants, waivers, and stipends

If you elect to use our private pay option, we can set up a payment plan. Our goal is for you to get the help you need right away, so if you can only pay a portion of the cost up-front, we’ll work with you to find a solution.

Some public assistance options can help those in need of treatment access care when they are uninsured or otherwise unable to afford treatment. Financial support might take the form of grants, waivers, or stipends through federal, state, or local organizations. There are also specific programs in place to help veterans who are struggling with addiction.

Some employers also offer assistance for employees who are working to overcome substance abuse issues.
